Summary

Thyroid-stimulating hormone, also known as TSH, is a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the pituitary gland. The secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone by the pituitary gland is promoted by the thyroid-stimulating hormone-releasing hormone (TRH) secreted by the hypothalamus on the one hand and on the other hand. Also subject to the feedback inhibitory influence of thyroid hormone, the two antagonize each other and form the hypothalamus-adenopituitary-thyroid axis. TSH is the main stimulator of thyroid hormone secretion. It is mainly responsible for regulating the proliferation of thyroid cells, the synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormone, and plays an important regulatory role in maintaining normal thyroid function.
Why Test TSH?
TSH is the most sensitive indicator of thyroid function.
By measuring indicators such as TSH, total triiodothyronine (TT3), and serum total thyroxine (TT4), thyroid function can be reflected and whether there is hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
Excessive thyroid hormone secretion can lead to hyperthyroidism,with a series symptoms of palpitation, sweating, weight loss, irritability, bad temper, increased heart rate, etc.;
Too little thyroid hormone secretion can lead to hypothyroidism, with a series symptoms o fatigue, drowsiness, inability to concentrate, loss of appetite, weight gain, slow movement, etc.
