Summary
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is a heterodimeric glycoprotein formed by non-covalent combination of α and β subunits. It forms a glycoprotein hormone family together with luteinizing hormone (LH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which have the same α subunit, but each has a specific β subunit, Different β subunits determine their biological activity. FSH has important medicinal value in the field of reproductive health. It can not only promote ovulation for natural production or artificial insemination, but also help produce multiple eggs for in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic injection of single sperm egg cells. In women, follicle-stimulating hormone plays a role in the recruitment, selection, and dominance of follicles by acting directly on granulosa cells, causing granulosa cells to proliferate and stimulating the appearance of LH receptors on granulosa cells. FSH acts in the early follicular phase and cooperates with LH to achieve monofollicular ovulation in a normal menstrual cycle. Low FSH value is seen during estrogen and progesterone therapy, Sheehan's syndrome, etc. FSH is highly common in premature ovarian failure, ovarian insensitivity syndrome, primary amenorrhea and so on.
