Summary

Estrogen is a steroid hormone consisting of 18 carbon atoms with an aromatic A ring. Endogenous estrogens mainly include estrone (estrone, E1), estradiol (17β-estradiol, E2) and estriol (estriol, E3), of which E2 has the strongest biological activity. Only free estrogen has biological effects, and 98% of E2 in the circulation forms bound estrogen with sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). Estrogen can enter target cells by passive diffusion, or it can be actively transported into cells by specific transporters located in the serosa. Estrogen is mainly produced by the ovaries, and a small amount is also formed in the testes and adrenal cortex. During pregnancy, estrogen is primarily formed in the placenta. The target organs of estrogen include the reproductive system (vulva, vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries) and the non-reproductive system (skin and its appendages, bones, cardiovascular system, central nervous system, and liver). Estrogen works together with a series of growth factors to promote the growth and differentiation of various tissues and organs, and plays an important role in the reproductive system, nervous system and skeletal system.
