Summary

Antimullerian hormone (AMH) is a member of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) superfamily and is a 140kDa dimeric glycoprotein. It is secreted by the immature Sertoli cells of the testis and the granulosa cells of the preantral and small antral follicles of the ovary. In women, AMH plays an important role in the follicular development of the ovary. Serum levels of AMH are barely detectable in women at birth and reach their highest levels after puberty. It then gradually declines with age and cannot be detected after menopause. Serum AMH detection is mainly used clinically to evaluate ovarian reserve function, which can indirectly reflect the number of antral follicles in the ovary, can more accurately diagnose premature ovarian insufficiency, and predict the response to controlled ovulation induction. In men, AMH is secreted by the Sertoli cells of the testis. AMH secretion by Sertoli cells begins during embryogenesis and continues throughout life. AMH production continues from the testes until puberty, and then slowly decreases to post-pubertal levels. AMH testing helps to differentiate between gonadal dysplasia and androgen synthesis disorders.

The current clinical methods for detecting AMH include chemiluminescence, immunochromatography and so on.
