VEGF(Vascular endothelial growth factor),was originally known as VEGF A before it was first named in 1989 with a molecular weight of approximately 45 kDa. VEGF family is a signal protein produced by many cells that stimulates the formation of blood vessels, involving in both vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. To be specific,it is the key mediator of angiogenesis that is the development of new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, and has important roles in growth and development, wound healing and tumorigenesis. In blood,VEGF may be located in the plasma, or in the blood-borne cells and formed elements, in particular, platelets and leukocytes.
