Summary

According to WHO data, more than 15,600 cases of monkeypox have been reported by 14 Aug. 2024, exceeding the total number of cases last year, with 537 deaths. In addition to the sharp increase in the number of infections, a worrying point about this round of monkeypox is that a new type Ib variant is spreading rapidly.The most affected groups are women and children under 15 years old, with children accounting for more than 70% of cases and 85% of deaths.

In May 2024, African scholars took the lead in reporting the new monkeypox virus Ib lineage, and in the past month, four neighboring countries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have successively broken the "zero monkeypox infection record", and about 90 infections are related to the new variant. In addition, Sweden also confirmed the first case of type Ib monkeypox infection on August 15.
