Intended use
The Microfluidic Fluorescent Immunoassay POCT Kit is used for the quantitative determination of procalcitonin (PCT) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in whole blood, serum and plasma in vitro.It is for professional use only.
Summary
PCT is a peptide precursor composed of 116 amino acids, with a molecular weight of 13KD. Healthy individuals have minute/negligible levels in their serum. In a response to a bacterial stimulus, PCT levels rise significantly, especially in severe sepsis and septic shock.
PCT can therefore be a prognostic marker of early sepsis and also lower respiratory tract infections.PCT is a pro-hormone that belongs to the calcitonin protein superfamily. In healthy people, PCT levels in the blood are low (~0.05 ng/mL), but increase rapidly in response to a systemic bacterial infection. The concentration of PCT in the blood correlates with both bacterial load and severity of infection. The half-life of circulating PCT is short, only 25-30 hours. Therefore, PCT is a good biomarker for the specific detection of a systemic bacterial infection.
IL-6 is a cytokine that functions in inflammation and maturation of B cells. The protein is primarily produced at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, where it is secreted into the serum and induces a transcriptional inflammatory response. This classical responsiveness to IL-6 is governed by a receptor complex consisting of two membrane-bound subunits, an 80-kDa cognate Alpha-chain (IL-6R Alpha), and a ubiquitously expressed 130-kDa Beta-chain receptor (gp130) which acts as the universal signal transducing element for all IL-6 family cytokines.
Many different cells are capable of IL-6 synthesis including monocytes/macrophages, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, keratinocytes, mast cells, T cells and many tumor cell lines. In vivo and in vitro, IL-6 acts as a differentiation factor for B cells and an activation factor for T cells.
