Summary
S100β (S100αβ and S100ββ) proteins are also known as central nervous system-specific proteins, and some scholars call them the “C-reactive protein” of the brain. It is an acidic calcium-binding protein with a molecular weight of 21KD, mainly produced by astrocytes. The amino acid residues form disulfide bonds and exist in the central nervous system in the active form of a dimer.
S100β protein has a wide range of biological activities and plays an important role in cell proliferation, differentiation, gene expression and apoptosis. Under physiological conditions, the S100β protein in the brain begins to be weakly expressed on the 14th day of the embryonic period, then increases in parallel with the growth and development of the nervous system, and is relatively stable in adulthood. Normal adult serum content is less than 0.2ng/mL. Under physiological conditions, it is a neurotrophic factor that affects the growth, proliferation and differentiation of glial cells, maintains calcium homeostasis, has certain effects on learning and memory, and promotes brain function.
